The three chapters of Psalm 144-146 present a powerful image of God as a protector, provider and praiseworthy King, while extending His mercy to the weak as sovereign over all creation. Chapter 144 starts with God training His people’s hands for battle and protecting them in time of conflict. It exposes man’s frailty while highlighting God’s lovingkindness in providing for all of man’s needs. We see a change in chapter 145 with hymns of praise, with a description of God’s character as gracious, compassionate and slow to anger. It describes the kingdom of God as everlasting where He sustains all of His creation. Finally, in chapter 146 we see a contrast between the unreliability of human leaders with the absolute faithfulness of God. He executes justice for the oppressed, feeds the hungry and watches over those who are vulnerable. Together, these three Psalms show, with great clarity, that God is worthy of our praise and worship because He is always there for us and will never forsake us.
