Psalm 78 was written to share the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord. The lyrics sing of determination to not hide these things from the next generation. That generation would then tell it to the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. And here we are, hearing it in turn.
These thoughts lead to the idea that lack of faith can be a memory problem. Forgetting what God has done in the past decreases trust in what can be done in the future. Forgetting the wonders which have already been shown can make us miss the wonders right in front of us. Our attention is so often like a passing breeze which does not return.
The consequences of forgetting are detailed with excruciating clarity in Psalm 78. Rivers of blood, widows who could not weep, futility, and terror. Abandonment to the sword is language which is hard to bring to life since we are so blessed, privileged, and often spoiled by our safety today. We have difficulty remembering the pain of those who came before us. How often have you heard someone wish for “the good old days” with rose-colored glasses, ignoring the many problems which existed for themselves and for others even less fortunate? Those living on the fringes of society are most vulnerable to the hungry forces which dwell outside of the community.
How often do you remember the pain of older generations?
However, there is more to remember.
The Lord awoke as from sleep and built a sanctuary like the heights.
Remembering the pain means we can remember the healing as well. When in the wilderness you can feel so abandoned. There are so many kinds of wilderness; dysfunctional family, toxic relationships, financial struggles, depression, anxiety, impulsive anger, and so many more than these. The world can feel like a wilderness of woe. When spiritual amnesia sets in from exhaustion and disuse of our focus, it is easy to ask “Can God really spread a table in the wilderness?” When constantly antagonized it is easy to ask if anyone can help us find comfort. When feeling stressed it easy to ask if anything can create peace.
Listen to the music of Psalm 78. Hear the message which has not been hidden. Hear what has been shared from generation to generation to us today and to those who are yet to be born.
The Lord has done wonders. Remember His commands to the skies above, the food of angels falling down to nourish the children of God. He will do the same for you. Pay attention to the past, and your senses will be exercised to discern the wonders which are happening right now. And repeat the tale! There are those who long to hear of these wonders. Let us get to work and sing aloud of praiseworthy deeds!
