Have you ever felt weary? Has someone ever tried to comfort you, during a difficult time, but nothing was able to make you feel comforted, it was as if your soul refused to be comforted? Have you ever felt faint with deep sighing? Have you ever felt so troubled that you couldn’t even find the words or energy to be able to speak? Have you ever been unable to sleep at night, instead you are left to ponder your life or stress about your current situation? - Asaph did. And Asaph expressed these kinds of feelings in Psalm 77:1-6.
When you think about God, has the thought ever disturbed you? Have you ever felt like God just continues to reject you? Has it felt like God will never again show you favor? Have you ever wondered if God’s lovingkindness has ceased? Or that His promises have come to an end? Have you ever pondered whether God has just forgotten to be gracious, or perhaps He withdrew His compassion from you because He was angry? Have you ever been grieved, because it seemed like God had changed? - Asaph did. And Asaph expressed thoughts like these in Psalm 77:3, 7-10.
What should we do in moments like that? What can we do in moments when we are so distressed and worn out, that we even begin to wonder if God has forsaken us or changed? Well, what did Asaph do when he felt like that?
First, Asaph raised his voice to God, crying out to Him with confidence that He would hear him (Psalm 77:1). “In the day of [Asaph’s] trouble [he] sought the Lord” (Psalm 77:2, NASB95). Asaph even expressed these feelings of distress, confusion, and doubt to God in prayer/ song (Psalm 77:1-10).
Whenever we feel overwhelmed, or even abandoned, in the day of our trouble we should seek the Lord. Cry out to Him, knowing that He will hear you. And, just like Asaph, we can tell God about the way that we feel, even if that means talking to God about times that we have doubted His loving character. There is no one better to whom we could take these feelings of abandonment.
Then, Asaph remembered the deeds of the LORD and meditated on all His deeds, especially times that God had delivered His people, like during the Exodus from Egypt (Psalm 77:11-20). - “I shall remember the deeds of the Lord; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old. I will meditate on all Your work And muse on Your deeds. Your way, O God, is holy; What god is great like our God? You are the God who works wonders; You have made known Your strength among the peoples. You have by Your power redeemed Your people…” (Psalm 77:11-15, NASB95).
Whenever we are in a dark moment of despair, whenever we begin to doubt God’s faithfulness and love, let us cry out to God and then remember the deeds of the LORD. Spend some time considering what God has done throughout history. Read or recount stories from the Bible about the deliverances that God provided for His people. Remember times in your life when God has blessed you and times when He has delivered you. Meditate on the works of the LORD. When we do that, then we too will be reminded that God’s way is holy. There is no god like our great God! Our God is the God Who works wonders! Our God has redeemed His people by His great power!
